On December 6th, DICE will release a huge update for the PC version of Battlefield 3. The patch weighs in at 2GB and its mandatory to download. The release of the update will coincide with server updates that will take them offline for several hours.
Why’s the patch so big? It contains the data for the upcoming “Back to Karkand” expansion pack. “Karkand” adds four remade versions of Battlefield 2 maps along with weapons and vehicles. The DLC is free if you pre-ordered the game. Otherwise, you’ll need to pay $14.99.
The expansion won’t actually be playable until December 13th, though. Furthermore, the folks who didn’t pre-order BF3 might not necessarily want “Karkand” but they’ll be forced to download the data anyway. On the plus side, if you’re interested in the DLC, this early patch you’ll be ready to dive into the new content as soon as the 13th rolls around.
The patch also brings a number of tweaks and bug fixes. For starters, you’ll once again be able to reduce the number of players required to start a round to 1. DICE says that this will be coupled with a “warm-up mode,” which lets players play the game normally but won’t keep score until the number of players exceeds the threshold.
Activision has said that it will support dedicated servers in the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 despite ongoing concerns about how they can be used to cheat online.
Developer Infinity Ward famously ditched dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2, claiming that it wanted to guarantee service quality for its whole customer base – a move that caused consternation throughout its PC community.
“The big announcement today is that we’re supporting dedicated servers for PC, which is really cool,” Noah Heller, who works at Beachhead Studios on Call of Duty stats service Elite, told Eurogamer at gamescom 2011.
Well, two days left for Brink to start.
We will see, if we get enough members to play Brink.
For now, I ordered a server on my own so we have a start up right now.
After 1 month, I can decide to keep it or to drop it.
It will depend on how many (new) members we can get onto this game.
